Carl Albert’s Ily Strickland

Carl Albert High School senior Ily Strickland still remembers what it took to earn a varsity spot as a freshman.

With 13 golfers competing for places, Strickland said she had to rank in the top eight to make the Lady Titans team. She earned the spot and helped Carl Albert win the state championship that season, a title she said was the first in golf for Mid-Del.

“My biggest accomplishment would be making varsity as a freshman,” Strickland said. “There was 13 girls on that team, so I had to be 8 to get the spot. That year we also won state, which was the first state title in golf for all of Mid-Del.”

Strickland said golf has shaped her in ways that go beyond competition. She said the sport demands honesty and discipline because players are responsible for keeping score and following the rules.

“I think my sport has taught me integrity,” she said. “I believe golf helps build character and discipline in a unique way. In golf, you have to keep your own score and follow the rules, even when no one is watching.”

She said that lesson stays with her away from the course.

“That responsibility has taught me to do the right thing, even when it would be easy not to,” Strickland said. “Because of golf, I’ve learned the importance of integrity both on and off the course.”

Strickland said her father has had the biggest influence on her life. She said his example as a husband, father and man of faith has helped guide her.

“My dad is my biggest inspiration because he shows me what it’s like to have a great father and husband,” she said. “He has always provided me and my siblings with everything we need and supported us through it all.”

She also credited teammate Addy McAlister for making a lasting impression.

“Addy McAlister has left the biggest impression on me because she is an awesome teammate and friend,” Strickland said. “She wants to see her teammates succeed and is so happy when we do.”

As her high school career nears its end, Strickland said she is thankful for the support around her.

“I want to thank my parents and siblings for being there for me and being my biggest supporters,” she said. “I also want to thank Coach Copeland for pushing me to be a better golfer and teammate these last four years!”
