Q&A with Westmoore’s Athletic Director Chad Mashburn

VYPE: When did you take over as AD, and what was your professional background prior to this position?

Chad Mashburn: I became an AD at Moore high in 2012. My first year at Westmoore was the fall of 2022. I was a science teacher and coach before I stepped into this role. I have coached football, basketball, cross country, and track.

VYPE: What is new in the athletic department, and are there any plans for future developments?

CM: We have many projects that are finishing up and we are excited to be in those facilities. We are always talking about plans for the future and ways we can enhance our students every day and patron’s gameday experiences.

VYPE: Why is community support essential to an athletic department?

CM: We would not have our wonderful stadiums on our campuses if it were not for our patrons and their support. With our new stadium opening on campus, it has been a blessing to be able to walk across campus and have a true home game. Our softball facility is one of the best in the state. We are very thankful for all the support.

VYPE: What should parents of incoming freshmen know as their student-athletes prepare to compete at the varsity level?

CM: Parents should understand that playing at this level is hard and takes time and effort to be good. We play against some of the best athletes in the state day in and day out. Be proud to be a Jaguar and be willing to put in the work that it takes.

VYPE: Which community partners and sponsors have supported your student-athletes this season?

CM: There are many but one stands out. Ortho Central helps support our athletic trainers on a daily basis. They provide doctor support for our athletes and give back to our school in multiple ways.

VYPE: Given the changing landscape of high school athletics, what is your perspective on the current state of prep sports in Oklahoma, and how can the experience be improved for students?

CM: That is a good question. I never would have imagined we would be where we are now. I don’t know if some of the things are necessarily bad they are just different than when I grew up. We played where we lived and were proud of the logo on our chest. Today it seems people are looking for the next best or easiest route to success. We need to find a structure that benefits all schools, but my problems are different from what a small school might have.

VYPE: What is the biggest challenge you face as an athletic director in 2026?

CM: We are always looking for great coaches to lead our program. I am finding it is harder to find coaches that are seasoned and have lots of experience, especially assistant coaches.

VYPE: How do you enjoy spending your free time away from school?

CM: I love spending time with my family. They understand the rigor of this job and are supportive in what it entails. My wife is my biggest supporter. She loves sports and is a fan of all of our coaches and athletes.

VYPE: What advice would you give to a first-time athletic director taking over a program?

CM: Be patient and listen to everyone. The process takes time to change how you want your programs to look.  I have been here at Westmoore for 4 years now and I am just now feeling like we have things headed in the right direction. Finally find a good assistant. That person will help you be successful.

VYPE: What is your message to the senior class of 2026, and what would you like returning students to know?

CM: We are grateful for what you have accomplished here at Westmoore! We are a better school because of you! Returning students have a lot to live up too! Let make those before us proud of what we do day in and day out.
