Washington’s Emersyn “Emmy” Massey

Washington High School senior Emersyn “Emmy” Massey knows what it means to fight her way back.

The Lady Warriors varsity track athlete said the proudest accomplishment of her career was returning from a devastating knee injury that required surgery and months of recovery. Massey said she tore her ACL, injured her meniscus and suffered multiple ligament strains along with major bone bruising, but refused to let the setback define her.

“My personal accomplishment I am most proud of is overcoming my knee injury,” Massey said. “I set goals and came back strong and months earlier than predicted. Hard work and keeping a strong head are what got me to where I am today and being able to hold many state championships.”

That experience shaped more than her athletic career. It also changed the way she approaches life.

Massey said track has taught her resilience and the importance of getting back up after difficult moments. She said mistakes and setbacks are inevitable, but they do not have to be the end of the story.

“My sport has taught me to walk through life with resilience,” Massey said. “That no matter how many times you get knocked down or you think something is the end of the world, you always have to pick yourself back up and keep going.”

Her inspiration reaches beyond competition. Massey said she looks up to Sadie Robertson because of the way she lives out her faith and cares for others. She said those qualities are the kind she wants to reflect in her own life.

Massey also credits one of her teammates, Presley Lucas, with leaving a lasting impression. Lucas showed her what it looks like to lead through hardship, even when injury kept her away from the game she loves.

“It put into a new perspective for me that you always show up and never take your abilities, practices, or games for granted,” Massey said of Lucas. “She continued to lead, and I will forever carry that lesson I learned from her.”

For Massey, success is measured by more than medals. It is found in resilience, faith and the decision to keep moving forward, one race and one challenge at a time.
