The Huskies have an opportunity to do something no team in Oklahoma 6A boys basketball has ever done this year: complete a three-peat. “[I’m] very excited about this year’s team,” two-time defending state champion head coach Scott Norris said. “We return our core group that has won back-to-back state championships. We play an extremely difficult schedule, which will prepare us for post-season play. I think we can be much better offensively than we have in the past, but we have to improve on the defensive end.” The Huskies tout 6A’s most decorated player and may have picked up the state’s best transfer, too. Forward Dylan Warlick’s (6-5, Sr.) resumé speaks for itself; The two-time 6A state tournament MVP and reigning Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference player of the year scored 18.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per game last year while attracting offers from several Division I schools before he committed to Wyoming in September. Chiante Tramble (6-2, Sr.) averaged 16.0 points and 6.0 assists at nearby Putnam City West as a junior before joining Huskies this offseason. “I look for [Tramble] to have a huge impact for us,” Norris said. Dontrell Yearby Jr. (6-1, Sr.) put up 10.0 points a night for the Huskies last year.
He’s a guard “who does everything” for Edmond North, Norris said and a “tremendous defender and shooter [who] will have a huge impact on our success this season.” Jonathan VanBuren (6-3, So.), a newcomer from Little Rock, Ark., joined the team this offseason. Norris called him “an explosive athlete and great finisher at the rim.” Other returners include Bryce Potts (6-6, Sr.), a talented forward who put up 8.0 points per game last year, and Xavier Ross (6-7, Sr.) and Tatum Ridge (6-2, Sr.), who both bring positional size to the floor. Landin Fitzgerald (5-9, Sr.), who Norris championed as the team’s hardest worker, will look to have an inflated role in Edmond North’s system this year. “[Fitzgerald] shows up early and stays late,” Norris said. “His hard work will pay off this season.” Edmond North will play in the Tulsa Public Schools Tournament of Champions on Dec. 28-30 and the Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions (Springfield, Mo.) on Jan. 11-13.
