Blaklei Smith, a junior at Chandler High School, is making the most of her high school experience both in athletics and academics. An accomplished multi-sport athlete, Blaklei plays basketball, competes in fastpitch, and runs track. She enjoys working alongside her teammates toward shared goals and using the talents she feels God has given her. Some of her most memorable athletic achievements include reaching the fastpitch state semifinals and competing at state in both the 4×8 and 4×4 track relays.
Blaklei credits much of her success to the guidance of her family and coaches, who have instilled in her the values of perseverance, hard work, and sportsmanship. “Coach Herring has always been there to believe in me when I can’t believe in myself,” she says. Beyond athletics, Blaklei is actively involved in Positive Peers, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, PSI, the National Honor Society, and she serves her community as a member of the First Baptist Church in Chandler.
Blaklei’s involvement extends to Gordon Cooper Technology Center in Shawnee, where she is enrolled in the Health Careers Program. She first learned about Tech from two former softball teammates and was drawn to the opportunity to gain real-world experience and prepare for the workforce. Through her program, Blaklei is working toward obtaining her CNA certification early, giving her a head start in the medical field.
“Tech is a unique experience, and you get to meet so many new people from different schools,” Blaklei says. She finds that her time at Gordon Cooper is not only preparing her for a future career by teaching her valuable medical skills, but it is also helping her explore which healthcare occupations she might want to pursue. While she hasn’t finalized her plans after high school, she hopes to attend the University of Central Oklahoma or East Central University to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or Nursing.
Blaklei Smith is a standout example of a student balancing academics, athletics, and community involvement while building a strong foundation for her future. Her dedication, positive attitude, and eagerness to learn continue to inspire those around her both on and off the field.
