Brady Morgeson, the Edmond Santa Fe High School second baseman talks about the game in the same way he talks about his walk with Christ: all about serving others first.
“My favorite thing about my team and teammates at Santa Fe is the selflessness and willingness to serve from every player, freshman to senior,” Morgeson said. “We open doors, pick up trash, high-five and pray together, just little things that make us special.”
He traces that mindset back to his faith.
“I’m inspired by my Lord and savior Jesus Christ,” he said. “His selfless love has infected myself and this team, and that same love keeps me going daily, even when I fail to realize it.”
Morgeson plays second base and takes pride in one of the toughest plays on the dirt.
“The most difficult or toughest play I make over there would have to be the backhand way up the middle,” he said. “You’ve got a whole lot of distance to cover.”
He calls his bat a strength and his arm a work in progress. “A strength of my game is my bat, but something I am working on is my arm,” he said.
Away from the field, Morgeson gravitates to people and preparation.
“In my free time, I love being with my girlfriend, hanging with my little brother, getting into the Word and studying scripture, and really just working on anything to improve my game,” he said. “To take it to a professional level, which is my aim, you’ve gotta understand that everything you put in your body, every minute of sleep, everything you do in a day is either moving you forwards or backwards. So, the food, water, weights, sleep, recovery, mental training, it’s all kind of bunched into my free time.”
For Morgeson, the game keeps circling back to relationships and humility.
“Something athletics has taught me that I will carry with me forever is how impossible it is to do things alone,” he said. “Any successes are together, and most failures are found in selfish pride.”
