Yukon’s Awbrey Dover
Yukon High School outfielder Awbrey Dover anchors the Millers’ defense with a steady glove and a calm presence in the most exposed part of the softball field. While some players gravitate toward the spotlight in the circle or at the plate, Dover has embraced the responsibility that comes with patrolling the outfield.
“I think my defense in outfield is my biggest strength,” Dover said. “There are some hitting aspects that I definitely need to improve on.” That blend of confidence and humility has helped define her varsity career at Yukon, where she is known as a reliable defender who is still hungry to grow.
Dover said the hardest part of her position is the pressure that comes with being the last line of defense. “I play outfield, and I would say the toughest thing about that position is the responsibility,” she said. “Having no one to back you up for most plays can be a lot of pressure.”
She leans on her teammates in those moments, and that unity is what she values most about the Millers. “What I love most about my team is that throughout all of the hardships we don’t blame our other teammates and all work together to come out on top,” Dover said. Teammates such as Camryn Parr and Payton Golden keep the dugout loose, which Dover said is essential over the course of a long season. “Camryn Parr and Payton Golden are the best girls on the team to lighten the mood and keep everyone laughing,” she said.
Her favorite memory so far came in the pressure of postseason play. “My favorite moment was our final regional game in my junior year fall season,” Dover said. Away from the field, she occasionally joins the school’s FCA group and enjoys supporting other sports at Yukon, reflecting the same team-first mindset she brings to softball.
Dover’s parents remain her biggest inspiration, and she said they model the strength and support she tries to show others. In the classroom, her favorite subject is English, and she points to her junior-year teacher, Mrs. Payne, as a standout influence. When she has free time, Dover loves to read and hang out with her sister.
