Yukon’s Madison McMahon
For Yukon High School sprinter Madison McMahon, track and field is as much a mental test as it is a physical one.
“Being a track athlete it’s a very individual sport so every race you run or event you do it can be mentally challenging but also rewarding at the same time,” McMahon said.
McMahon competes on the varsity girls track team for the Lady Millers, running the 4×200 relay, 400 meters and 4×400 relay. She said the best part of the sport is sharing those moments with her teammates.
“I love how we all can always be there for each other cheering each other on and competing together,” McMahon said.
Representing Yukon on the track means traveling to big meets and carrying the school’s name on her jersey, something she doesn’t take lightly. “Being able to represent such a big school especially Yukon you get to go to these big events and getting to show off our name,” she said.
McMahon credits former senior [Alyssa], a leader from her freshman season, with showing her how to approach the sport the right way. “Alyssa was a senior my freshman year and she always would set the tone at practices and was a great role model to look up to being so young,” McMahon said.
Away from the track, McMahon stays busy with another demanding sport — softball. She hopes that sport will help open the door to her future. “Go to college for softball and become a CRNA or anesthesiologist assistant,” she said of her plans after graduation.
McMahon said the mental side of track is her greatest strength, and it shapes how she trains each day. “I think track is a very mental sport so all the hard workouts and wanting to break pr’s you just have to have the right mindset and push yourself harder every day,” she said.
From relay exchanges to late-race finishes, McMahon’s mindset has helped her become a key part of Yukon’s varsity girls track program — and she is determined to keep pushing for faster times and bigger goals.
